From the beginning – with no end in sight...

Life sciences at Vilnius University have a 245-year history. That may seem like a long time in a human life, but when it comes to understanding life itself, it is remarkably brief. Throughout this history, life sciences have been shaped by people with stories of their own, intertwining the pursuit of knowledge with the lives of those who sought it.

This talk will introduce you not only to key moments in the history of life sciences, but also to the fascinating stories of the researchers behind them. You will hear about one of the most famous attempted poisoning cases of the 18th century and discover its surprising connection to botany. Which scientists of the time developed ideas well ahead of Charles Darwin? Why did researchers wear coats made of cat fur, and which professors painted their own laboratory floors?

History has a way of repeating itself, taking on new forms and adapting to the realities of each era.

The talk will be given by Mindaugas Rasimavičius, a researcher at the Vilnius University Life Sciences Center and PhD in botany.
